What are cookies?

“Cookies” are small pieces of data, stored in text files, that are stored on your browser, computer, or other device. These files are stored to be later transmitted to the same originating sites on a subsequent visit. Cookies may be deposited within the user's device directly from the website that the latter is visiting (first-party site) or from a different website, so-called "third-party", since within each website, there may be elements (images, maps, sounds, specific links to web pages of other domains, etc.) that may reside and/or lead the user to links present on servers different from those that deliver the first-party site. By storing cookies, the user can personalize the enjoyment of certain website content by saving his or her own preferred settings. For example, it is possible to set a cookie to recognize the user registered on the site without the user having to proceed, on the occasion of a new visit, to a new authentication.

Supervisor's proposed taxonomy

(Ref. Identification of simplified ways of providing information and obtaining consent for the use of cookies - May 8, 2014).

The Italian Data Protection Authority in Provision No. 229 of May 8, 2014, proposes a taxonomy that identifies two categories of cookies based on two possible processing purposes:
1) Technical cookies
2) Profiling cookies

Technical cookies

These cookies are often useful to allow you to browse a website and use all the features. Technical cookies are those whose use does not require the user’s consent. These are cookies that collect information about the use that a user makes of a website and that allow to improve its operation. For example, the analytics cookies show which pages are most frequently visited, allow you to check what are the recurrent patterns of use of a website and help to understand every difficulty that the user encounters in the use

Profiling cookies

Profiling cookies can instead be used to monitor and profile users while browsing, to study their movements and habits of web browsing or consumption (what they buy, what they read, etc.), also for the purpose of sending advertising of targeted services and custom. In this case we speak about profiling cookies. The use of these cookies requires the prior acquisition of the free informed consent of the user pursuant to art. 7 of the 2016/679 EU Regulation.

User consent for the installation of cookies on the device

You may wish to restrict the use of cookies or completely prevent them from being set. Most modern browsers allow you to change your cookie and other tracker settings, and you can usually find these settings in the options or preferences menu of your browser. Flash cookies can only be deleted within Adobe Flash rather than via your browser, and please refer to this Adobe help page for information on how to manage Flash cookies. Additionally, you can opt-out of Google Analytics by installing Google’s opt-out browser add-on.

These cookies are necessary for our systems to measure audience and usage statistics, as well as content consumption. These enable us to obtain relevant usage information to produce internal analytics so we can monitor and improve the performance of our systems.
