Euro Weakens Toward 1.1500 as US-Iran Conflict Escalates and Fed Holds Rates

The Euro retreated against the US Dollar during early Asian trading hours on Friday, with the EUR/USD pair sliding to near 1.1515 as escalating tensions in the Middle East fueled risk-off sentiment across global markets, according to FXStreet. The single currency came under pressure following statements by Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who warned on Thursday that the United States would pay the price for killing Iranian civilians, as reported by the Guardian. The threat signals a potential widening of the US-Iran conflict, rattling investor confidence and driving demand toward safe-haven assets.

Adding to regional instability, Saudi Arabia and 13 other nations announced the formation of an international coalition aimed at safeguarding freedom of navigation through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden. Analysts note that concerns over a prolonged conflict in the region are weighing on riskier assets, including the shared currency. On the monetary policy front, the US Federal Reserve held interest rates unchanged at its July policy meeting, a decision that generated market uncertainty regarding the new Fed chief's commitment to fighting inflation.

According to the CME FedWatch tool, markets are now pricing in approximately a 63.4% probability of a US rate hike in September, a notable decline from around 77% prior to the July Fed meeting. Despite the Euro's near-term softness, strategists at DBS Bank argue that the single currency retains a structural advantage over the Dollar due to clearer policy communication from European authorities. In their assessment, while Fed Chair Warsh "leaves US markets stumbling in the dark, the European Central Bank was more unified in flagging a September rate hike," a stance that is "handing the EUR a distinct comparative advantage" over the Greenback.

Looking ahead, market participants are awaiting the preliminary reading of the Eurozone's Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices for July, as well as the Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index, both scheduled for release later on Friday. These data points could provide fresh direction for the EUR/USD pair as traders navigate a complex backdrop of geopolitical risk and diverging central bank signals.
