Glencore's Chrome Ore Output Holds Steady at 1.65 Million Tonnes in H1 2026 as Ferrochrome Smelting Faces Pressure

Glencore's attributable chrome ore production remained resilient in the first half of 2026, holding near 1.65 million tonnes despite mounting strain in the downstream ferrochrome smelting segment, according to the mining giant's Half-Year Production Report 2026 published by Shanghai Metals Market (SMM). The group's 79.5% share of the Glencore-Merafe Chrome Venture yielded 1,647,000 tonnes of chrome ore in H1 2026, representing a decline of just 4%, or approximately 70,000 tonnes, compared with 1,717,000 tonnes recorded in H1 2025. Glencore attributed the modest pullback to «operating conditions over the period,» a notably measured explanation that stands in contrast to the more smelter-specific language the company deployed when addressing the ferrochrome segment of its operations.

Quarterly production data reveals a gradual and progressive easing rather than any abrupt operational disruption. Output stood at 910,000 tonnes in Q2 2025, climbed to 1,037,000 tonnes in Q3 2025, before stepping down to 859,000 tonnes in Q4 2025, 830,000 tonnes in Q1 2026, and 817,000 tonnes in Q2 2026. On a year-on-year basis, the Q2-to-Q2 comparison registers a 10% decline, underscoring the trend of gradual softening at the ore extraction level.

The findings from Glencore's report closely mirror data independently disclosed by Merafe Resources, the Venture's 20.5% partner. Merafe's own H1 2026 production disclosure showed chrome ore output of 425,000 tonnes, down 4% from 443,000 tonnes in the comparable prior-year period — an almost identical percentage decline to Glencore's reported figure. The convergence of both partners' disclosures confirms the pattern at the Venture level rather than attributing it to the reporting methodology of any single company.

The broader significance of this data lies in the divergence between chrome ore extraction performance and downstream ferrochrome smelting activity. While ore production has demonstrated relative stability, ferrochrome output has experienced a more pronounced contraction, reflecting the structural pressures weighing on South Africa's ferroalloys processing sector. According to SMM analysis, chrome ore extraction has held up considerably better than downstream smelting through the first six months of 2026, pointing to operational and economic difficulties concentrated in the smelting and processing stages of the value chain rather than at the mining level.
