IperionX Secures Second US Army SBIR Contract for Domestic Titanium Production

IperionX Limited (NASDAQ: IPX, ASX: IPX) has announced that the U.S. Army has awarded the company a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract focused on developing low-cost, domestically-produced titanium for defense applications, marking the company's second such contract with the military branch. Titanium is classified as a critical mineral by the United States, European Union, and Canada due to its essential role in defense, aerospace, medical, and industrial technologies.

The material is prized for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance, with limited substitutes available in modern manufacturing. Titanium exists in two primary commercial forms: titanium dioxide (TiO2), utilized primarily for pigments, and titanium metal alloyed for aerospace applications. The diversity of end-uses underscores the mineral's strategic importance across multiple industrial sectors.

Under the terms of the SBIR contract, qualifying U.S. Government agencies are authorized to place project-specific orders collectively capped at $99 million. Task Orders 1 and 2 have been assigned an aggregate stated value of approximately $19.8 million, with $79.2 million remaining available under the Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract ceiling.

The SBIR funding mechanism is designed to support the acquisition of equipment and manufacturing systems necessary to expand IperionX's domestic titanium powder-to-part manufacturing capacity. According to the company, the program will enhance titanium component-processing capability, relocate critical manufacturing steps to domestic facilities, and support shorter lead times. These operational improvements are expected to lower acquisition and production costs for U.S. defense applications.
