U.S. Energy Storage Capacity Reaches Record 20.2 GWh in Q2 2026

The United States installed a record-high energy storage capacity during the second quarter of 2026, as grid operators and utilities increasingly turned to storage solutions to enhance grid reliability and accommodate rising power demand, according to a new industry report released on September 1, 2026. The industry deployed 20.2 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of new energy storage capacity in Q2 2026, marking the largest quarterly installation on record. This brought the cumulative installations for the first half of 2026 to 30.8 GWh, according to the U.S.

Energy Storage Market Outlook Q3 2026 report published jointly by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. Utility-scale battery storage dominated the expansion, accounting for 18 GWh of the total installations, with support from seven gigawatt-scale projects. Arizona emerged as the leading state, deploying more than 6.2 GWh of utility-scale projects in a single quarter, representing the largest quarterly deployment for any state in history.

The residential energy storage sector added 657 megawatt-hours (MWh) of capacity, while the commercial and industrial (C&I) segment installed 1.8 GWh. The C&I growth was substantially driven by expanding power demand from data centers, SEIA and Benchmark Mineral Intelligence noted. In response to the sustained surge in energy storage demand aimed at reinforcing grid resilience, SEIA and Benchmark Mineral Intelligence increased their deployment forecast by 11.5% through 2030.

The revised projection anticipates the market will exceed annual installations of 110 GWh, with cumulative capacity reaching 683 GWh by the conclusion of the decade. According to SEIA, the upward revision reflects continued record-breaking deployment rates, with more than 10% of all energy storage capacity currently installed in the United States coming online during Q2 2026 alone. Shan Tomouk, BESS and Energy Lead at Benchmark Minerals, observed that energy storage expansion is no longer concentrated in traditional markets.

"We're seeing strong pipeline growth in Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Colorado and several other states," Tomouk stated, indicating geographic diversification across the sector. Battery energy storage supplied more electricity to the U.S. electrical grid during the first eight months of 2026 than throughout the entirety of 2025, demonstrating accelerating deployment momentum.
