Northam Platinum opens bidding process after receiving unsolicited acquisition offer

South Africa's Northam Platinum has announced it is opening a competitive bidding process following an unsolicited acquisition offer from an unnamed major South African platinum group metal miner, according to a statement released on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. Northam Platinum, the country's fourth-largest PGM producer, disclosed that it had been approached regarding a potential transaction that could be structured at either asset or corporate level. The company stated it is inviting proposals from multiple parties on various transaction structures, including from the interested PGM producer that made the initial approach.

The board of Northam has identified a range of credible parties that may wish to pursue a transaction with the company. In its statement, Northam emphasized that it is not pursuing any particular outcome and will not prescribe the nature or structure of potential transactions. The company said it will evaluate credible proposals based on their ability to create and enhance shareholder value.

Currently, Northam operates three wholly owned mines and produces approximately 940,000 ounces of platinum group metals and 1.7 million metric tons of chrome annually. The company has set production targets of 1.5 million ounces of PGMs and 2 million tons of chrome by 2031. The move follows Northam's unsuccessful bid in 2023 to acquire mid-tier PGM producer Royal Bafokeng Platinum, which was ultimately acquired by Impala Platinum after a protracted acquisition battle.

An acquisition of Northam would reshape South Africa's PGM industry landscape, leaving the sector with three dominant producers: Valterra Platinum, Impala Platinum, and Sibanye Stillwater. Source: Reuters reporting via Mining.com
