SAIL achieves record production and sales in H1 FY27 amid expansion push

Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), the country's largest state-owned steel producer, posted record performance across multiple production and sales metrics during the April-September 2026 period, demonstrating strong operational momentum as the company pursues aggressive capacity expansion targets. SAIL produced 10.2 million tons of hot metal, 9.6 million tons of crude steel and 8.39 million tons of finished steel during H1 FY27, representing year-over-year growth of 2 percent, 1 percent and 1 percent respectively. The company achieved a notable improvement in finished steel share, which increased to 89.2 percent of total saleable steel production from 86.8 percent in the prior year period, signaling enhanced product mix optimization.

High-end steel production emerged as a particular bright spot, reaching approximately 2 million tons and expanding 30 percent year-over-year. This performance reflects SAIL's strategic focus on value-added product categories that command premium market positioning. Iron ore operations delivered equally impressive results, with production climbing 13 percent year-over-year while sales surged 190 percent to 2.671 million tons.

Railway-related dispatches, a key market segment for SAIL, also demonstrated resilience with long rails shipments rising 7 percent and wheels and axles sales increasing 3 percent during the half-year period. September 2026 marked the strongest month in SAIL's history for saleable steel sales, reaching 1.69 million tons and rising 4 percent year-over-year. The company's branded SAIL SeQR TMT reinforcing bars exceeded 150,000 tons in monthly sales, representing the highest monthly volume achieved.

The month also witnessed record dispatches of structural steel, plates and galvanized steel products. Looking ahead, SAIL's capacity expansion agenda takes on heightened strategic importance. The company currently produces approximately 20.6 million tons of crude steel annually but has set an ambitious target to expand capacity to 35 million tons per year by FY2031.

This expansion strategy positions SAIL to capture growing domestic demand and strengthen India's steel self-sufficiency. SAIL operates five integrated steel plants and three special steel plants across India, with production capabilities spanning flat products, long products, special steels and railway steel grades. The company's operational footprint and product diversification provide multiple levers for driving future growth as capacity expansion initiatives progress.
