Per-gram and per-ounce prices are derived from the per-kilo price: 1 troy ounce = 31.1035 grams, 1 kilogram = 32.1507 troy ounces.
What silver is worth per gram according to fineness
- 1.849 EUR/g 999 silver (fine)
- 1.710 EUR/g 925 silver (sterling)
- 1.479 EUR/g 800 silver
From the per-gram price of the spot base multiplied by the fineness: it is the value of the fine metal contained, not the buying or selling price of an object.
How the silver price in euro is formed
The world reference is the LBMA silver price, fixed once a day in London in dollars per troy ounce. To get to a price in euro per kilo it is converted at the day’s euro-dollar exchange rate and taken from the ounce to the kilogram. It is the base from which the Milan market quotations start, which for decades have been the reference of the Italian silver market.
The two bases of the Milan list correspond to two different moments in the life of the metal. The spot base is the price of LBMA silver made available in Milan, including transport premiums and any charges: it is the reference for buyers of refined metal, in bars or grain. The origin base is the value recognised for silver going back to refining — process scrap, recoveries, returned silver — and takes account of the costs of recycling (transport, melting, any charges): that is why it is the lower of the two.
Until 31 July 2026 these quotations were published by ASSOMET; since 1 August 2026 FT Mercati has continued their calculation with the same criteria and the full history preserved.
Gram, troy ounce, kilo: the conversions
Silver is quoted in three units depending on the market: the troy ounce on international markets (LBMA, COMEX), the kilogram on the Milan market and in wholesale trade, the gram in jewellery and in the valuation of objects and coins. A troy ounce weighs 31.1035 grams, not 28.35 like the common ounce: a kilogram equals 32.1507 troy ounces.
The conversions are immediate: the per-gram price is the per-kilo price divided by one thousand; the per-troy-ounce price is the per-kilo price multiplied by 0.0311035. With silver at 850 euro per kilo, for example, a gram is worth 0.85 euro and a troy ounce 26.44 euro. The table at the top of the page does the calculation every day on the latest published session.
999, 925 and 800 silver: the value by fineness
The market price refers to fine silver, 999 fineness. Objects are almost always alloys: 925 (sterling) silver used in jewellery and silverware contains 92.5% fine metal, the 800 silver of traditional silverware 80%. The value of the metal contained is obtained by multiplying the per-gram price by the fineness: with fine silver at 0.85 euro per gram, a gram of 925 contains metal worth about 0.79 euro and a gram of 800 about 0.68 euro.
This is the value of the content, not a buying or selling price. Whoever buys silver from a bullion dealer or sells objects to a silver buyer pays or receives a price that incorporates margins, processing, assaying and refining costs; for silver scrap the closest reference is the origin base, which precisely takes account of the costs of recycling.
Who this page is for
Goldsmiths, silversmiths and refiners who set price lists and value stocks in euro per kilo or per gram; industries using silver in electrical contacts, brazing alloys and catalysts; private individuals who want to understand the value of an object or a coin from its weight and fineness. Frequently asked questions
- What is the silver price today per gram?
- It is in the table at the top of the page, for the spot base and for the origin base: it is obtained from the per-kilo price of the Milan Index divided by one thousand and is updated to the latest published session. It is the value of fine silver; for an alloyed object it must be multiplied by the fineness.
- What is the difference between the LBMA price and the Milan price?
- The LBMA fixing is the international price in dollars per ounce. The Milan bases start from that price expressed in euro per kilo: the spot base adds transport premiums to Milan and any charges, the origin base takes account of the costs of recycling. They are the references of the Italian market.
- What is 925 silver worth per gram?
- 92.5% of the per-gram price of fine silver: with silver at 0.85 euro per gram, about 0.79 euro. It is the value of the metal contained, not the price at which a shop buys or sells an object.
- Why is the price per ounce so different from the price per gram?
- Because the troy ounce weighs 31.1035 grams: the per-ounce price is the per-gram price multiplied by 31.1035. Do not confuse it with the common ounce, which weighs 28.35 grams.
- How often is the price updated?
- Every trading day, with the value of the latest published session; on days when the market is closed the last value remains. FT Mercati subscribers have real-time data and the full history.
The values are market references calculated and published by FT Mercati, not buying or selling prices: for purchases and sales the dealer’s conditions apply. Numerical examples are for convenience.
