How the gold price in euro is formed
The reference is the Fixing preziosi FT Mercati for gold, calculated twice a day at the times of the London auctions, at 11:30 and 16:00 Italian time: the mean of two spot prices sampled 30 and 60 seconds after the start of the auction, in dollars per troy ounce; euro and sterling are obtained at the spot exchange rate sampled 60 seconds after the start. The price per gram and per kilo are derived from the value per ounce.
The gold price in euro therefore depends on two things: the dollar price on international markets and the euro-dollar exchange rate. A stronger dollar raises the euro price even if the ounce does not move; a stronger euro lowers it. For those who buy and sell in Italy, the value in euro per gram is what counts in price lists and valuations.
On this site we publish the previous session's fixings; FT Mercati subscribers receive the day's fixings as soon as they are calculated and the real-time spot price, on the web and in the app, together with the full history.
Gram, troy ounce and kilo: the conversions
Gold is quoted in dollars per troy ounce on international markets, in euro per gram in the jewellery trade and by gold buyers, in euro per kilo between bullion dealers and refiners. The troy ounce weighs 31.1035 grams, not 28.35 grams like the common ounce: confusing the two is the most frequent error in conversions.
The conversions are immediate: the price per gram is the price per ounce divided by 31.1035; the price per kilo is the price per ounce multiplied by 32.1507. With gold at 4,000 dollars an ounce and an exchange rate of 1.15, for example, a gram of fine gold is worth about 112 euro and a kilo about 112,000 euro.
24, 18 and 14 carat gold: the value by fineness
The market price refers to fine gold, 24 carat or 999 fineness. Jewellery is almost always an alloy: 18-carat gold (fineness 750) contains 75% fine gold, 14 carat (585) 58.5%, 9 carat (375) 37.5%; 22 carat (916) is used for some coins, such as the sovereign and the Krugerrand, and in Asian and Middle Eastern jewellery. The value of the metal contained in an object is obtained by multiplying the per-gram price of fine gold by the fineness.
It is the value of the content, not a buying or selling price: whoever sells scrap gold to a gold buyer or buys bars and coins from a bullion dealer meets margins, refining costs, the spread between buying and selling prices and, for investment products, a premium over the fine price. The fixing remains the transparent starting point for comparing offers.

Frequently asked questions about the gold price
- What is the gold price today per gram?
- In the session of October 27, 2026 the FT Mercati gold PM fixing was 116.951 euro per gram for fine gold (4,055.25 dollars per ounce): 18-carat gold is worth 87.713 euro per gram, 14 carat 68.416. The day's fixings are available to subscribers in real time.
- What is 18-carat gold worth per gram?
- 75% of the per-gram price of fine gold: with fine gold at 110 euro per gram, about 82.50 euro. It is the value of the metal contained, not the price a gold buyer will pay, which includes a margin.
- What is the difference between the AM fixing and the PM fixing?
- They are the day's two references, calculated at the times of the London gold auctions: 10:30 and 15:00 London time, 11:30 and 16:00 in Italy. The PM fixing is the one most used in contracts, because it comes when the American markets are also open.
- Why is the price per ounce so different from the price per gram?
- Because the troy ounce weighs 31.1035 grams: the price per ounce is the price per gram multiplied by 31.1035. With gold at 110 euro per gram, an ounce is worth about 3,420 euro.
- What does the gold price depend on?
- On real interest rates and expectations about central banks, on the dollar, on central bank purchases, on ETF and investor flows, on jewellery demand in India and China and on the supply from mines and recycling; in times of geopolitical or financial tension gold is the safe haven par excellence. The gold price guide explains each factor.
- Where can the gold price be seen in real time?
- On the FT Mercati platform, on the web and in the app: the day's fixings as soon as they are calculated, the real-time spot price and the full history. On the public site you will find the previous session.
The values are market references calculated and published by FT Mercati, not buying or selling prices: for purchases and sales the dealer's conditions apply. Numerical examples are for convenience.
