Digital platform Metalshub has partnered with Hindalco Industries to introduce a structured digital tendering process for spot alumina sales, marking a significant shift toward digitalization in the alumina market. The first tender under this new process is expected to take place between October and December 2026. Alumina, the primary raw material used in aluminium production, has historically been traded predominantly through long-term contracts rather than on the spot market.
According to Metalshub, spot price assessments in the alumina sector are typically based on surveys rather than confirmed transactions, which can limit market transparency and price discovery mechanisms. The digital bidding platform is designed to facilitate wider participation from qualified buyers through competitive request-for-bid events, allowing participants to submit confidential bids in a structured environment. This approach aims to generate transaction-based pricing data from actual competitive bidding rather than relying on survey-based assessments.
Metalshub stated that digitalization has successfully increased liquidity and improved commercial outcomes in other commodities markets, including lithium and industrial minerals. The company is also collaborating with the London Metal Exchange and Commodity Pricing and Analysis Ltd (CPAL) to develop transaction-based price discovery mechanisms for critical raw materials, including alumina. Hindalco, part of the Aditya Birla Group and one of India's major aluminium producers, selected the Metalshub platform to enhance the competitiveness and transparency of its metallurgical-grade alumina spot sales through digital means.
