Nano One Materials Corp. has announced the advancement of its first Development Company project, known as Canada DevCo, aimed at establishing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode production capacity within Canada. The company is conducting a site evaluation study to assess potential locations for a proposed 25,000-tonne-per-year (ktpa) cathode production facility, with potential expansion to up to 100 ktpa of production capacity. The project is designed to serve energy storage systems (ESS), electric vehicle (EV) and defence markets in Canada and internationally.
According to Denis Geoffroy, Chief Operating Officer of Nano One, the initiative responds to increasing market demand for LFP cathode active materials from regionally focused and resilient supply chains. The company aims to expand its operational footprint beyond its existing Candiac Facility in Quebec. Canada offers competitive industrial power costs and one of the lowest-carbon electricity grids globally, positioning the country advantageously for LFP cathode production.
The Canada DevCo project aligns with Canada's automotive, defence and critical minerals strategies. By connecting Canadian upstream resources with midstream processing through to downstream cell manufacturing, the project supports the nation's objective to capture more value from its critical minerals, build resilient industrial capacity and advance a lower-carbon economy. Nano One is actively engaging with regional suppliers to develop battery-grade lithium carbonate, phosphoric acid and iron feedstocks for future LFP cathode production.
The company is testing materials from numerous Canadian suppliers at various stages of development through both its Burnaby Research and Development centre and the Candiac demonstration facility. Particular focus has been placed on sourcing local iron feedstock with suitable characteristics, while the company continues to evaluate broader lithium and phosphate supply options. Early development workstreams are underway, including engineering of the standardized 25,000-tonne-per-year plant design based on the One-Pot LFP CAM Package.
This work is supported in part by funding from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), as announced on April 8, 2026. Customer qualification activities continue in parallel at the Candiac facility. Each project is intended to be financed on its own merits through a combination of government and private investment. The company expects to provide further updates as site evaluation, supply chain qualification and partner discussions progress.
