India Metals & Ferro Alloys Limited (IMFA) has commenced the first tapping of hot metal at its new furnace as part of a Greenfield ferro alloy expansion project located at Kalinganagar in Odisha, according to a company statement released on Thursday, August 27, 2026. The first furnace, designated as KNR-1, has a nameplate capacity of 100,000 metric tons per year. IMFA indicated that production volumes would be gradually increased over time following the initial tapping phase.
The expansion project includes a second furnace scheduled to be commissioned in September 2026. Upon completion of both furnaces, IMFA's total ferro alloy installed capacity will reach 500,000 metric tons per year, representing a significant expansion of the company's ferroalloy production footprint. The Kalinganagar plant was acquired by IMFA from Tata Steel Limited in 2025.
