November Natural Gas Settles Lower at $2.602 Despite Intraday Gain; Storage Stays Above Five-Year Average

The November 2026 NYMEX natural gas contract settled at $2.602, down $0.038, according to the NRG Energy Daily Market Update dated October 27, 2026 (nrg.com). Earlier in the session, the same contract was trading up $0.062 at $2.664. The intraday gain and the settlement decline point in opposite directions, and the source does not explain the difference.

This article therefore treats the settlement as the reference price for the November contract and presents the intraday figure only as a separate reading. The source does not state the reference price used to calculate the intraday change, nor does it indicate how the intraday quote relates in timing to the settlement. Readers should not treat the intraday rise as confirmation of a price increase.

The settlement table refers to the last natural gas trading session. The NYMEX settlement table shows the December 2026 contract at $3.022, down $0.028. The 12-month strip settled at $2.858, down $0.004.

Cal 2027 settled at $3.007, up $0.003, while Cal 2028 settled at $3.629, down $0.006. NRG describes the forward pricing curve as backwardated among its bearish factors, although in the settlement table the later-dated contracts are priced above the November contract. The source does not reconcile this characterization with the table.

NRG also states that NYMEX pricing is used solely as a proxy for physical natural gas pricing. Total natural gas demand averaged 106 Bcf/d over the past week, according to the source. Much of the recent decline was attributed to lower power burn, which reached a high of 33.9 Bcf/d before falling to 29.1 Bcf/d on the day of the report, a decline of nearly 5 Bcf/d.

LNG feedgas remained elevated, averaging approximately 21 Bcf/d over the past week. The Golden Pass LNG facility has not yet reached full capacity at its first train, but volumes have stabilized and have recently approached the train's estimated maximum of approximately 0.8 Bcf/d. Dry gas production averaged 111.8 Bcf/d over the past seven days after recovering from maintenance in the Appalachia region.

NRG lists near-record gas production, healthy storage and a backwardated forward curve as bearish factors. It lists record-high LNG exports, growing demand driven by data center load growth, and geopolitical factors and global supply swings as bullish factors. In the EIA Natural Gas Storage Report, as presented by the source, total working gas stood at 3,567 this week, up 67 from 3,500 last week.

This was 143 below the 3,710 recorded last year, a difference of -3.9 percent, and 45 above the five-year average of 3,522, a difference of 1.3 percent. NRG states that storage levels, weekly injections or withdrawals, and comparisons with the five-year average can exert upward or downward pressure on prices. The source table does not label the storage units.

For power markets, the source reports next-day on-peak prices for the day-ahead market cleared for October 27, 2026. CAISO SP15 settled at $20.08/MWh, ERCOT North Hub at $26.90/MWh, ISO-NE Mass Hub at $45.90/MWh, MISO Indiana Hub at $49.74/MWh, NYISO Zone G at $48.20/MWh, and PJM West Hub at $66.58/MWh. According to NRG, these prices indicate where unhedged load would settle.

In crude oil, the December 2026 contract was down $0.71 at $101.05. The source does not specify whether this refers to WTI, Brent or another benchmark. The source also references 6-10 day and 8-14 day weather outlooks, but the forecast details are shown only in charts and are not described in the text.
