OPEC+ Loses Market Influence as US-Israeli War on Iran Disrupts Global Oil Supply

Six months into the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran, OPEC+ is facing an unprecedented challenge to its market dominance. The world's most powerful oil alliance has lost much of its ability to influence global oil markets, a dramatic shift from its historical role in shaping energy prices and supply dynamics. The conflict has closed a major export route for West Asian crude oil and damaged energy infrastructure across several OPEC member states.

This has significantly reduced the organization's share of global oil production and, consequently, its influence over pricing mechanisms. Market participants now note that OPEC+ policy decisions and official statements have minimal impact on oil market movements. According to Reuters calculations based on International Energy Agency data, OPEC+ accounted for approximately 40 percent of global oil production in July 2026.

This represents a substantial decline from the organization's pre-conflict share of more than 48 percent before the US and Israeli attacks on Iran commenced in late February 2026. The reduction in OPEC+ production share stems from multiple factors. Around four to five percentage points of the decline resulted from the United Arab Emirates' withdrawal from OPEC in May 2026.

The remaining decline is attributable to production disruptions caused by the ongoing military operations and infrastructure damage in member states. The organization's core group of seven major producers, including Saudi Arabia and Russia, represented just one-quarter of global oil output in July 2026, further illustrating the erosion of OPEC+ market power. Declining Chinese crude oil imports have emerged as one of the defining factors for 2026 energy markets.

Rather than OPEC+ policy decisions, Chinese demand patterns have become instrumental in stabilizing oil markets amid what industry analysts characterize as the worst supply disruption on record. Source: Reuters, International Energy Agency, TC Media (Instagram post dated August 27, 2026)
