As of August 26, 2026, the Shanghai Zinc main contract 2610 closed at RMB 26,240 per ton, with zinc prices continuing to fluctuate at elevated levels. According to Shanghai Metals Market (SMM) data, the spot premium-discount in Guangdong has remained consistently negative throughout August, fluctuating between minus 140 yuan per ton and minus 80 yuan per ton. Regional social inventory stood at 29,000 tons as of August 26, reflecting the ongoing dynamics between supply tightness and demand weakness in the region.
The Guangdong zinc spot market is currently characterized by a relative balance between bullish and bearish forces, creating a stalemate that keeps the premium-discount firmly in discount territory. On the bullish side, continuous destocking of regional social inventory has tightened available spot liquidity, with smelter arrivals declining on a periodic basis. The low Shanghai-LME zinc ratio has maintained an open export window for refined zinc, diverting cargoes overseas and further constraining domestic supplies.
Additionally, certain deliverable brands face limited spot availability, with traders maintaining firm quotes that prevent deeper discounts from materializing. According to SMM, these factors provide downside support for the spot premium-discount. Counteracting these bullish factors are significant bearish headwinds.
With zinc prices elevated above RMB 26,200 per ton, downstream end-users are displaying pronounced price aversion, opting instead for rigid-demand purchasing or drawing down existing inventories. Enthusiasm for spot small-lot purchases remains muted, capping any upside potential for premium-discount movement. Furthermore, no material improvement in end-user consumption has materialized, as the market remains in the traditional off-season.
Although orders from downstream sectors including galvanizing and die-casting zinc-alloy have improved month-on-month, overall demand remains weaker year-on-year, lacking substantial fundamental drivers to support prices or premiums. Looking ahead, SMM analysts project that Guangdong's spot premium-discount will likely remain confined within a discount-dominated range-bound pattern in the near term. Three key variables will determine whether the current trading pattern can be disrupted.
The first variable is sustainability of the export window. Should the LME backwardation persist and the Shanghai-LME zinc ratio remain low, the export window will stay open, supporting regional inventory levels and underpinning spot premium-discount. The second critical variable is the smelter shipment rhythm.
Output declines at some smelters have already curbed cargo arrivals in Guangdong during the third quarter. Once smelters complete maintenance and resume regular shipments, increased inflows will weigh on local premium-discount. The third variable is zinc price trajectory itself, as price movement serves as a core determinant of downstream purchasing sentiment.
A price pullback could unlock demand for basis-priced deals and restocking activity, providing periodic support to premium-discount. Conversely, further price rallies will amplify downstream price aversion and maintain persistent pressure on premiums. In the short term through early September, SMM expects Guangdong premium-discount to oscillate within discount territory with a solid discount floor and limited upside potential.
Although Shanghai zinc has reached fresh highs since February on robust LME performance, domestic end-use consumption has not staged a notable recovery. High price levels continue to discourage downstream buying interest. A persistent export window and tight supplies of deliverable brands will prevent discounts from widening further, while downstream price aversion and seasonal off-season conditions rule out any shift into spot-premium territory.
For the medium term spanning late September through October, the traditional consumption peak season—often referred to as Golden-September-Silver-October—may present a potential turning point. However, downstream order feedback indicates that most market participants remain cautious about future demand, and the ability of end-use demand to lift Guangdong spot premium-discount remains uncertain. Should seasonal demand materialize as expected alongside sustained regional destocking, spot discounts may narrow periodically, but any breakthrough from the current discount-bound pattern appears unlikely without significant shifts in market fundamentals.
