What it is

Brass base bar Milan is one of the five brass bases quoted on the Milan market, in euro per tonne. Brass is the copper-zinc alloy most used by Italian industry — taps, valves, small metal parts, turned parts, sheets and tubes — and the Milan list quotes several bases because each alloy grade has a different copper content, and therefore a different value.

The base bar is the list reference for brass bars destined for turning and hot stamping, the form in which the alloy reaches most Italian workshops.

Until 31 July 2026 this quotation was part of the "Milan prices" calculated and published by ASSOMET, the Italian national association of non-ferrous metal industries. Since 1 August 2026 FT Mercati has continued its calculation independently with the same criteria: the Brass base bar Milan index is the continuation of the same series, with the full history preserved.

Why does brass have five bases?

Because each alloy grade has a different copper content and the value of the alloy changes accordingly: 63, 67, 70 and 85 indicate the approximate copper percentage, the base bar is the reference for bars for turning. The 70 and 85 items have been quoted since the start of 2023.
