What it is
Nickel silver 64 Milan is the reference quotation of nickel silver on the Milan market, in euro per tonne. Nickel silver, also called alpacca or German silver, is the silvery-coloured copper-nickel-zinc alloy used in cutlery, eyewear, small metal parts, musical instruments and electromechanical components; the 64 base indicates an alloy with about 64% copper and nickel and zinc in equal parts.
How it is calculated
The value follows the LME quotations of the three metals contained — copper, nickel and zinc — expressed in euro and integrated with the Italian market premiums, in proportion to the composition, plus processing. Daily publication on trading days, with a continuous history.
From ASSOMET to FT Mercati: continuity of the series
Until 31 July 2026 this quotation was part of the "Milan prices" calculated and published by ASSOMET, the Italian national association of non-ferrous metal industries. Since 1 August 2026 FT Mercati has continued its calculation independently with the same criteria: the Nickel silver 64 Milan index is the continuation of the same series, with the full history preserved.
For those who use it in contracts nothing changes: monthly averages, year-on-year comparisons and price-revision clauses cross 1 August 2026 without a break. It is advisable to update the contractual reference to "FT Mercati Nickel silver 64 Milan index" and, for existing contracts, to share the transition with the counterparty.
What it is used for
Rolling mills and wire drawers producing nickel silver strips, wire and bars use it as the basis for price lists; cutlery, eyewear and small-parts manufacturers to check price adjustments and for contractual revision clauses.
